The assessment of possible “cognitive slippage”, or decreased thinking abilities with age, is assessed via a comprehensive sampling of an older individual’s memory, visual spatial skills, attentional abilities, language functioning, and psychological status. Determination of whether one is experiencing “normal aging” effects, or actual mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or even a dementia (such as Alzheimer’s) can be determined by such an assessment. Such an evaluation can also distinguish between depression and dementia, which are often confused by medical practitioners.
